a storied past & vibrant present

Following European contact, the area around 544 Carroll served primarily as farmland until the early 19th century. Around this same time, multiple villages emerged along the shore of what is now the Gowanus Canal, taking advantage of the proximity of what was becoming a major industrial and transportation waterway for the growing City of Brooklyn.Over time, south Brooklyn flourished, and the completion of Prospect Park incentivized wealthy New Yorkers to build Gilded Age mansions and fashionable row houses near the new green space. Today, these same qualities—things like ample space, abundant nature, and friendly neighbors—continue to attract residents.

Gil Hodges Community Garden

Adjacent to 544 Carroll, Gil Hodges Community Garden, named after the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers baseball player and manager, has provided a verdant escape for New Yorkers since its establishment in 1982. In 2013, fragrance house Jo Malone London sponsored the sanctuary, and in conjunction with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Gil Hodges became the first of the New York Restoration Project’s community gardens to implement a stormwater management system, which greatly improves local water quality. Today, community members can enjoy a fragrant walk inspired by Jo Malone perfumes, a birch reading grove for quiet relaxation, and an outdoor classroom area with a blackboard, composting station, and raised vegetable beds. For 544 Carroll residents, the garden’s impact on the community is evident both broadly and close to home. In fact, the serene, organic interiors of 544 Carroll were partly inspired by Gil Hodges Community Garden.

Fast Growing

Named one of StreetEasy’s top neighborhoods to watch in 2022, Gowanus is as fast-growing as it is desirable. Its industrial past forged the way for an area laden with a laid-back, creative feel, which continues to be fostered in recent years thanks to several breweries, music venues, restaurants, and more. A major rezoning in 2021 paved the way for new developments.Additionally, several sustainable, community-driven developments are underway, including widening sidewalks to foster greater walkability and plans for an open, waterfront space on the shores of the Gowanus Canal. This is just the cusp of its bold transformation.
